First Year as Head Coach

Well, I went from "Team Mom/Equipment Manager" to impromptu Assistant Coach for my daughter's indoor/Futsal team, to Head Coach of a Girls U-12 team in three years.I've never played soccer on a team - just helped my daughter with her skills and really paid attention during practices with select teams and professional coaches (we played up last year when she was 9 to a U-13 league). Before this, I coached cheerleading and softball. Kids are pretty much the same wherever you are, and I've made it a point to really do my homework on the game. I think I've also managed to recruit a young man to the position of volunteer assistant coach - and he HAS played before. We'll see if a 22-year-old can withstand 10 & 11 year old girls :) So far, he seems to be having a good time and the girls like him.

Nervous about our first game!!!!

Hi! My husband and I are Coach and Assistant Coach for our 5 year old Daughter's Soccer Team. We have 8 precious little girls (ages 4 and 5). We are the "Sweet Peas" and our first game is THIS Saturday. Due to weather, we've only had 2 practices....a little nervous about our first game! We're ready to just have fun at this young age but don't want to miss out on "learning opportunities" for our girls to grow on. Would LOVE advice on drills/games that teach corner kicks, goal kicks, kick in's, and kick off's.

So I thought up the drills from my own soccer practices that the kids in my school could do. I so far have three but I can't think of any more.Thank you any answers would be appreciated.

YOUTH FINISHING DRILL

One of the keys elements of finishing is accuracy. Power is nice, but it's a distant second in priority. In the past, I have always stressed the need for shooting with the instep. Though, I don't want to downgrade the importance of this technique, I am starting to believe it is more meaningful to emphasize first and foremost accuracy by "passing" the ball into the goal. Power can be trained later after the player understands a slow roller into the goal is worth more than a rocket shot not on frame.Warm-up -- Set up two lines (of 1 to 2 players), six to eight yards apart (goal post width); these two lines are directly across from two other lines of players; the distance between the sets of two lines are ten to fifteen yards (coach should adjust to player age and ability).
    A2 C2 A1 C1 | ^ ^| | \/ | | /\ | | / \| V V B1 D1 B2 D2
A1 passes straight across to B1 and follows the pass to the B line; B1 receives, makes an angled pass to C1 and follows pass to C line; C1 receives, makes a straight ahead pass to D1 and follows pass to D line; D1 makes an angled pass to A2, etc.Warm-up Progression* Ask players to pass with specified foot* Restrict number of touches to control ball before making next pass* Switch to an instep pass, if accuracy can be maintained* At some point, have the team envision that each line is a goal post; the straight ahead passes are to the near post, the angled passes are to the far post* Ask the players to pass to the inside foot of the receiving player (i.e., inside the post)Warm-up Coaching Points:* Ensure the inside of the foot is used to pass (as this normally is the most accurate type of pass for a player)* Play should be continuous, have extra balls ready between groups A & C and groups B & D. Bad passes can be chased down by the passer while the next player puts a new ball back into play* Make sure receptions are toward the targetShooting Drill:Setup -- Structure the drill exactly like the warm-up, except with a goal between groups A and C. When A passes to B, B finishes with an angled pass to the far post; when C passes to D, D finishes with an angled pass to his/her far postDrill Progression:* Change drill so that A passes across to D who finishes (to the near post) with a straight on pass; C passes across to D who finishes with a straight on pass* Restrict number of touches before shot* Use instep (if accuracy can be maintained)* Add a GK; initially position the GK away from the post the players will be shooting; that is, the GK should be shaded toward the side that makes the initial pass* Let the GK be active and allow the attacker to finish to the appropriate post and appropriate part of footDrill Coaching Points:* Stress accuracy, not power, constantly* The position of body and support foot should be towards the finishing point* Have player look up to side of goal they are finishing; when GK added, player should look to near post, if not covered shoot there, else go to far post (do not look at or try to find the GK)* Make sure player is looking at the ball at the point when the shot is taken* Team and coaches should reinforce every made goal with some kind of positive exaltation; save the loudest for the accurate goal as the power shot will get its fair share of "oohs" and "aaahs."--Thanks to: Gary Rue, KY HS and Select

4 Simple Soccer Drills With Cones

Intro to simple soccer drills with cones

It is always fun to open up a video on the web and see players like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dazzling the world. It almost seems that they have the soccer ball attached to their foot. That is why the world loves them. When they touch the ball everyone is left in awe. While it seems like it is magic, it is not. These players are the best in the world and have become that way by practicing fundamentals. There are many drills and exercise that you can do to better your foot skills. It won't necessarily stun millions of people around the world but it will certainly help you play better. It will help you in one-on-one situations and increase your ability as a player.

Dribbling between the cones

Set up seven cones about a meter apart from one another in a straight line. The cones serve as an obstacle course that you must run through. Once they are set up, dribble through them slowly. Start on the right side of the first cone and go to the left of the next cone. Then go to the right side of the next cone and so on. When you reach the end turn around and do it again. When you feel comfortable, you should try using just your left foot or right foot. Isolating one side of the foot is always important to increasing your abilities

With the same set up, try dribbling around the cone. You should try to stay as close as you can to the cones without touching them. When you have successfully completed one rotation, go on to the next cone. You should continue until you have gone through the entire line of cones. Once again, you can concentrate on one foot at a time while working on you ability to cut.

Cut backs in the circle of cones

To begin, set up seven cones in a circle about 3 meters wide. Enter the circle and begin dribbling freely. Once you have become accustomed to the size of the circle, start to dribble up to the cones. When you get close, stop the ball by stepping on it and pulling it back. Then keep cutting across the circle and doing that. After a few moments go back to random dribbling. If you want to get better quicker, maker the circle smaller.

Soccer Golf

For this drill you need a lot of open space. Take your seven cones and spread them around the soccer field. If you feel like being really ambitious, place a number 1-7 on them. With them spread out, try to hit them using a combination of long passes and short passes. Play it like golf and keep track of your score. Once you hit one go onto the next one. See how many passes it takes to complete your soccer golf course

Speed zones

For this drill you will also need a lot of space as well. To begin, you need to set up cones standing upright or laying down. You should alternate between to two. The cones that are lying down are "Speed Up" zones and the cones that are standing are "Slow Down" zones. When you pass through a speed zone you sprint while dribbling the ball and when you pass through a slow zone you jog and dribble. These soccer-drills are all about increasing your dribbling abilities, your long and short passing and your cuts. They may seem very basic but when you practice over and over, these skills become second nature on the field.

THROW-IN, TRAP and DRIBBLE

I picked up a drill from another coach and thought it was pretty good. I used it this season to begin the season for my U8 team and it went very well. It's pretty simple, but you get 3 skills involved in one drill. The throw-in, trapping the ball, and dribbling. You begin by having about half your kids along a sideline and half at a cone at about 10 o'clock about 8/10 yards away. Basically set up a triangle. Have the kids do a running throw-in from the sideline towards an imaginary point between the cone and the sideline. The child at the cone runs from the cone, traps the ball and then dribbles around a cone set out parallel or a bit further down the sideline. He/she then dribbles down the sideline to prepare to do a throw-in.Thanks To: Marc Noble, U8 NW Lions

I've played soccer all my life for a premier team. I'm coaching a girl's middle school soccer team this year. I know drills, but not ones that they're capable of doing...they have specific habits of the defense packing into the goal, not passing, and not getting into open space.--any kind of drill would help!thanks a ton :)

Girls playing soccer

Over the past few years, girls soccer has become one of the most popular sports in the world. Millions of girls and young women play the sport, and its popularity is only increasing. There are a number of reasons for this popularity. First, girls soccer is a great way to stay fit and active. It requires a lot of running and coordination, and it's a lot of fun. Second, girls soccer is a great way to meet new people and make friends. It's a team sport, so it encourages teamwork and cooperation. Finally, girls soccer is a great way to learn about other cultures. Because it's so popular around the world, girls who play soccer have the opportunity to meet and play with girls from all sorts of different cultures. This can be a great way to learn about new customs and traditions. Girls soccer is a sport that has something for everyone, and it's no wonder that it's so popular.

Since the early 1990s, girls soccer has grown tremendously in the United States. From 1990 to 2009, the number of girls playing soccer in high school increased by nearly 50 percent. The number of girls playing soccer in college has also increased significantly. In 2010, there were over 34,000 women playing college soccer, up from just over 21,000 in 1990.

Investment in girls soccer has also increased significantly in recent years. In 2010, Major League Soccer (MLS) launched the Girls' Development Academy, a nationwide program designed to identify and develop the best young female soccer players in the country. MLS has also invested in the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), a professional women's soccer league that launched in 2001.

Red Card from SoccerClub

Earlier we posted our first draft of our Rules for Membership to SoccerClub. The rules come down to show respect and don't screw around with anyone. We get constant notes about some of the "agents" offering to help players and coaches find teams. They are difficult at times to investigate since we don't want to punish and honest person doing honest work. However, what we have learned is that old classic; if it smells rotten, then it probably is.

As a result, we have started to ban some users, and I will keep a running list here in case these situations and pitches come back again, then we can squash them again. I posted their notes "as is" so you can identify if hese cases come up again at SoccerClub, or on another site that you are using. Please note that these are posted as written. If you decide to use these emails, you are doing so at your own risk.

Referees

I'm a senior referee in Sydney and my passion is to help players and referees get on with each other better. That's got to be good for the game generally, but it's also an important consideration when it comes to enjoyment of the game and gaining an advantage over your opposition. So, if you're interested in subjects like getting on with the referee better, understanding his (or her) decisions, appreciating what motivates... and demotivates... referees, why they still do it despite all the abuse and sometimes threats they get, etc....Then I'd like to hear from you. Let's get a dialogue going.
