Handling a Disruptive Parent

If you are a coach or administrator of a youth soccer team, you may have to deal with a disruptive parent. This can be a difficult situation, but there are some things you can do to try to resolve the issue.

If a parent yells at a player during a game, it can be very disruptive and distracting. It can also be confusing for the player, who may not know how to react. In some cases, it may even make the player angry or upset. If this happens, it is important to try to remain calm and focused on the game. It is also important to remember that the parent is probably just trying to support their child and that they are not trying to hurt or disrupt the game.

First, try to talk to the parent privately and explain your concerns. It may be that the parent is unaware of their behavior and will be willing to change it. If the parent is uncooperative or belligerent, you may need to involve other parents or even the league.

It is important to remember that the child's well-being is always the top priority. If a parent is being truly disruptive and is not willing to change their behavior, it may be in the child's best interest to be removed from the team.

Went to my first WPS game

Saw the Breakers host FC Gold Pride the other night(Wed) and was an interesting and enjoyable night.-Got in for free as a group that was there had some leftover tickets for the game, so saved the $13 ticket(note:that is the cheapest seat in the house). Negative: should of used money saved to buy a seat cushion. Seats are more like concrete slabs(really).-Lovely night for a game, but fans are seated on East side of stadium , so sun glares right into you and the sound system was poor. Had no clue who was going in and what was being announced at all. Might have been better in the north end of the stadium. No behind goal seating, which I prefer.-The Breakers have a fan/supporters group that was 15 people strong and had some quality songs and chants, but as the league caters mainly to families, kind of surprised with the amount of "You suck" chants coming from them(but they are in the south corner of the stadium away from the crowd, which stinks for them)-Game was okay and is always tough to evaluate these when your getting ConFed games in the afternoon with the likes of Spain, Brazil and even South Africa was entertaining that day. Breakers did not have a shot(IMO) until the 2nd half, but had nice possession, just passes into the final 3rd seemed off. FCGP was BIG in the back and played safely away from trouble, midfield had nice movement and the Japanese player was a handful(was sitting among alot of FCGP fans, incl Tiff Weimer's family)-Do a nice job with building the atmosphere, but the cameras seemed to be more focused on fan shots during play than the game. Cameras on the game were at the top of the stadium, so the shots appeared as if they were from a blimp.-Food/drink options alot on the former, so so on the latter. Prices go from $3 to $8 on food and you can get RedBones BBQ which is quality grub. Drinks...Coronas, Guinness and Bud(think all went for $6). Better bet take the 5-10 min walk over to Harvard Square which has tons of options.-Parking-$10...REALLY??? Cost me $4 = free to park in Somerville and $4 to take the T fr Davis Square(10 min ride tops w/rush hour service meaning little wait time). As game kicked at 7, you can try to find on street parking, but having worked in Harvard Square...good luck with that.-Have post game autograph session with I think both teams which is great for the kids(not sure about a post game drink up for the adults...hey now)-Breakers-Lilly always great to watch. Smith came in the 60 min mark and was solid(must be hurt), Nobis was WOTM-came on as sub at half...bundle of energy was fun to watch...scored the tying goal...needs to work on the celebrations though(I kid, I kid...). Scott also nice to watch, ARod seemed to be off her game. For FCGP, Formiga was solid in the midfield and Tiff Milbrett was out there..great to see her still playing and playing hard. Barnhart the GK read the game very well and as stated the Japanese FWD/HB was a handful-Crowd was 3600+...lots of buses with fans from CT, ME..for a weeknight game that's some impressive travelling-Overall not a bad way to spend the night, especially for $4 total...made me missed living outside the big city. But bring a seat cushion...

SHIELDING

Here's How To Chart ItWarmupIn a circle dribbling around the coach the ball is always on the outside foot AWAY from the coach.. Change direction with a chop, outside of foot turn, etc. always AWAY from the opponent. In this case the coach in the center.Free PlayNo instructions. In pairs keep the ball away from a partner. Change every thirty seconds. Don't worry about resting. They will stop. Just keep circulating and keep them moving. About 2-3 minutes worth. Observe errors, who you will have to work with later, and who's good, so they can help you demonstrate. (Free play is an excellent opportunity to also train YOU. Increasing your observational powers and coaching eye).Drill(s)Critique the free play. Demonstrate with yourself and an opponent. Point your shoulder to her with the ball on the near leg and have a player try to steal it. They will. Ask the question/ What should you have done. The emphasis should be ball on the far leg.(Verbalizing)Put the ball on the on the far leg, shoulder pointed toward opponent. Now ask the player to get the ball. (I assume your big enough that body size, compared to player, will overcome any lack of skill)Now demonstrate dribbling with the opponent on the shoulder. Take a few steps. Then reverse direction with the same move you had them perform in the circle. Involve another pair of players to get them to demonstrate. Make corrections by asking the group what goes wrong.Split them up in pairs and have them try it. Circulate and correct. Wild body movements are a common error. Get them to calm down and perform. "Be cool. The man can't get it with the ball on the far leg, etc."Another common error will be turning their back on the opponent THE NEXT PRACTICE -NOT THIS ONE. Start at the beginning of drill above. "Yeah we got it coach- you did that last time". Now show the difference of having the back to the opponent vs the shoulder. Do this by letting the opponent kick the ball away from you by poking. Illustrate with the shoulder turned the distance between the ball is increased. Repeat all of the above.Your two main points are: ball on far foot, keep shoulder turned.Box Drill 3 v 1Same as usual, but this time change the emphasis from one or two touches to four or five. Alternatively, holding the ball for a five count before passing it.Small sided GameCarry over the condition from the box drill.Warm upSoccer dancing with sole of foot per pervious posts.Free Play/DrillsKeep ball under sole of foot, opponent leans on shoulder and tries to get to it. Reverse direction when opponent commits.Handling an opponent on the back.(Note this is not taught at the start since in earlier ages getting the shoulder around is preferred). The body lean is more, and the ball leg is extended to avoid being poked. Vary degree of physical pressure and pushing. {For new refs: try this with NO OPPONENT and you will see your arms have to be out for balance. Don't get caught up in the hands by the sides routine} Box drill again but 3 v 2 hold ball longer and include takeovers.Small sided gameCondition : forwards must hold ball from long passes until help arrives, takeover, etc.Coerver MoveStop ball by stepping on ball. Take giant step with same foot to put body between ball and opponent. Turn in opposite direction to dribble or pass. Practice using standard Coerver drills, buildup. Insist this turn be used through practice for all aspects of practice where a 180 turn is required, such as running down stray balls and returning to a group.Submitted by Dan Roudebush

UNC Women Add a 19th NCAA Championship

The UNC women added their another NCAA Championship to their incredible history – this is their 19th championship in the 27 years of the tournament. They beat Notre Dame 2-1. Notre Dame was trying to be the first team other than UNC to go undeated and started fast by scoring 16 seconds into the game. UNC has recorded 4 undefeated seasons. Amazon has some good book from UNC coach Anson Dorrance that might be of interest. I’ll soon have a book suggestion section, but this will do for today: The Vision Of A Champion: Advice And Inspiration From The World's Most Successful Women's Soccer Coach The Man Watching: A Biography of Anson Dorrance, the Unlikely Architect of the Greatest College Sports Dynasty Ever DVDs: Soccer - Training Championship Players and Teams Anson Dorrance Legacy Soccer Clinic

All about me
I am a very humble player with bags of determination to excel. I believe in one thing ‘what you put in is what you will get out’. I believe that if I put 100% effort into my football I will get a 100% back from it. However anything less than 100% does not bring out any rewards.
Apart from playing football I am interested in other sports such as long distance running, swimming and others. This also helps me improve my fitness as it is very important to have high levels of fitness in the position I play.
such as Position: centre defence/centre midfield/centre forward/outside right/outside left that likes to tackle, score and loves making life difficult for my opponents diffender. I’ve practised a lot and moulded my game around

Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I love the way he bosses the centre midfield surging runs up the pitch to help his team attack.
I am very good at doing the simple things on the pitch well such as giving the right passes, scoring , showing for the ball to receive in from my midfielder
and other midfield players, knowing when to release the ball and when to hold on to it enabling other midfield players and strikers to make runs up the
pitch.. I am also good in the air with a great leap on me and I have a very good shot on both feet
I am very good on and off the ball. Using the ball wisely when in position and closing down space when out of possession.

Attributes
Great right foot, very comfortable on both feet
Good in the air
Good awareness & imagination
Good range of passing, accurate & precise
Good goal scoring
Very fit
Great pace
Very strong
Versatile
Passionate
Strong communication (very important when playing in central midfield)
Tenacious

FIELD VISION GAME 2

Another View of This Drill The drill or I call a functional practice is actually called the "Four Goal Game". The main purpose is switching play from one side of the field to the other. If a player with the ball is prevented from moving forward, then he / she should turn with the ball with the objective of passing back to supporting players or by finding players who are in a better position to penetrate weaker areas of the field (preferably 2 v 1 situations). Remember, the game is about decisions and turning with the ball. The earlier the decision and the quicker the turning, the better the player. Key coaching points include ability to switch play either though a series of passes or long accurate passes; communication between supporting players and player with the ball; patience of players who must be in position at all times, this means players on either side of the field waiting for the right time; ability of players to turn on the ball, turn with head up; and finally your point; the ability of players to see the field. This is a great drill and should be encouraged alot. Thanks To: Eric Erickson

WEAVE -- OFF THE BALL

Here is my favorite drill that I put my 14 and under team through. It is called 4 Across the Top. As the name suggests, you will have four lines that run across the half field line. Each line will be 10 yards apart. I suggest that you put up cones to show where each line starts. #2 passes the ball about 5 feet in front of #1, then #2 makes a jog behind #1 and as #2 goes around #1, #2 will sprint to the corner of the field. As #2 is sprinting to the corner, #1 will send the ball ahead of #2, so that #2 will have to catch up to it. #2 will do a one touch cross to an awaiting #3 & #4. Now, as soon as #1 passes the ball to the corner for #2, #4 will make a break to the near post and #3 will make a break to the far post. Communication is very important in this drill... When the ball is crossed, the shot is to be a one touch shot at the goal. When they are done., the next group will start. All of the lines will rotate toward the number one position. In other words, #1 goes to #4, #4 to #3, #3 to #2 and #2 to #1... Good luck!!!!!!!! Submitted by Chris Morrissey
