With all due respect to Jeffrey Dixon's answer, I have a different perspective.
Phil, at 8 years of age you want to find out who your players are, the ones with a nose for the ball and, hopefully, the back of the net! The last thing you want to do is stifle that! I have watched player after player ruined by coaches that try to dictate the match from the sidelines (touchline for you soccer terminology fanatics), particularly as it relates to kids that want to score, they want the ball, and heaven help anyone that gets in their way. Do you know how many coaches would kill for a kid like that, boy or girl?
Phil, take your runner aside and tell him how important he is to you and the team, tell him that you depend on him to step up and be a leader, and tell him that sometimes being a leader means deferring to his teammates and allowing them a touch now and then. But for heaven's sake, do not stifle this kids creativity and thirst for the ball. It may take a few "special talks" but in the end, he or she will step up and the coaching you try to force from the sideline will happen naturally.
In the end?
You'll have a player that loves to do it all, control the pace, and go for the net! How great is that? In other words? You've got yourself the beginnings of a center mid!
How great is that?
Better yet? A striker! Center mid or striker! Let him/her run!
