I saw your profile in one of the public sites as i was surfing and browsing the internet in search to meet with honest football player's Agent, Mangers,Clubs,and Sponsor into my Football Club, as knowing football as one of the growing induestry in the world,and Bering people together. I got through your profile it's ok.
Yes Sam, I coach a boys U14 travel team and now a U14/U15 rec league team as they couldn't get anybody else to do it this season. I'm a touch over committed as I also serve on our board of directors and some how got stuck with field duties and the fund rasier! I love it but, this opeing week for our seasons was non stop.
Hi Sam..I just signed on to soccerclub.com and I see you had a question back n March about a U6-7 team for practice ideas? Hopefully you have some good ideas by now but if you want a few more look me up. As stated by others just keep it fun and keep the ball at there feet. Most kids that quit a sport quit because they get bored with routine trainig sessions.
I have now been coaching youth for @ 5 years. My son started U-8. I began coaching his team U-10 level.
I had never played before and was only assistant coach 1 year.
Here is some of what I have learned about coach youth so far:
Keep it fun - find games that include basic shill learning. Keep trying differnet games untill you find a couple they ALL like.
Practice mostly what they do in a real game situation.
Teach team work and respect. They win or loose as a team.
Lay down "your" disaplinalry rules up front with both the players and the Parents and enforce them. You will need their repsect. Once you have they they will give you "support" without asking.
Educate your self (soccer.com) or other sites that offer material on what a particular age group of kids are capable of learning. Don't expect them all to do everything at the same pace.
Give all the kids a chance to play all positions untill they proove or disproove their ability or aptitude.
DO NOT put too much emphasis on winning or loosing!
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IS - teach them the
correct way to kick and pass the ball usung the proper parts of the foot. If you do nothing else do this.
Lastly. find an adult game - club or group and play the game. Once I did I instantly had a whole new respect for what I was asking the kids to do.
Because our Norhern Arizona Youth Soccer League is also co-ed and "recreational" I to get players who have never played the game. As of the last 2 years, now that I understand the game and the kids I now afford a 90% return rate of my team each year by request.
